SAM Champs 99 Contest Results

Tandy Walker and wife Sue

The 99 Muskogee Champs are a wrap. (or "Wap" as the Michael Jordan commercial with Elmer Fudd states it) and the results are in. Here we offer some photos, some text and the official results as recorded by contest officials. It's always fun to see what others have done and it is a source of "armchair" modeling to discuss the types and sizes of planes and the powerplants chosen by those who competed. The best way to know though, is to BE THERE in Pensacola next year!

This was the first SAM Champs my wife Sue ever attended with me. The(above) picture was taken on October 4, 1999, just after we finished competing in the R/C Texaco Ignition event. This is our 1938 Lanzo Bomber with a 96 inch wing span. It is powered with a 1947 Anderson Spitfire 65 ignition engine with a 15 X 8 prop.

We got almost a six minute run on 24 cc's of a five-to-one mix of Coleman lantern fuel and 50W AeroShell aviation oil. Our best flight time was 28 minutes and 43 seconds, which placed us fifth in the event. Our placings were:

Playboy Ign Scramble--2nd

Pure Antique----------2nd

Class A-Ignition LER--4th

Class B-Ignition LER--5th

Texaco Ignition-------5th

We shared the excitement of competing and Sue now has a much better understanding for why I am so interested in SAM. I think she really enjoyed herself due mostly to the great people she met while she was there. Sue has already indicated she would like to go with me next year to the SAM Champs in Pensacola!....Tandy C. Walker
